Butch is Not a Dirty Word
Elevating a queer media platform for future anthologies.

Butch, a media company dedicated to curating and elevating the stories of Butch queers globally, was in need of a comprehensive rebrand to elevate its presence. The founder, Esther Godoy, sought a more polished and professional brand identity to position Butch for larger partnerships and legitimate its extensive content. Additionally, they required a new web design to begin a transition away from Kickstarter and to create a more established online presence.

A brand identity that balanced boldness with sophistication, reflecting Butch’s place in the queer media landscape. The new brand identity was designed to convey the company’s maturity within its niche while keeping the irreverent spirit that makes it unique. A strong and modern mark was created, complemented by a dynamic color palette inspired by modern art and contemporary queer culture. Graphic treatments pulled from traditional print techniques connected Butch’s storytelling roots with a fresh, forward-thinking visual language.

As a singular designer, strategist, and project manager, I was hired as a freelancer by Esther Godoy to handle the entire rebranding and web design process. My responsibilities included designing the logo and brand elements, crafting the visual direction, designing the website, and overseeing the project from start to finish. I worked closely with Esther to ensure the final deliverables aligned with Butch’s vision for the future while staying rooted in its core values.
